500 Books before college - A reading challenge for primary school aged children

We know that kids who read succeed, and we want every child in the Ōtorohanga District to be a reader!

Studies show that kids who listen to their parents read to them, or read themselves, have a larger vocabulary than kids who don’t get reading time at all. We know if kids enjoy doing something, they are more likely to take part in it - so let’s make reading fun!

Besides enhancing your child’s vocabulary, reading also helps them with learning how to write and read as well as understand different topics and how the world works. To help you to instill the reading habit into your child, we’ve started this Beanstack challenge.

You or your child log their reading on Beanstack. As they log their books, they earn digital badges to encourage them to continue.

We are also introducing a “Top of the Stack” award. At the end of each term, we will celebrate the top five library readers - and each reader will win a badge of honour. Can your child collect all four terms? If your child reaches the goal of 500 books before heading off to college, they will win a prize! Bonus! And all they have to do is read for fun.
