Waste Minimisation PlanTe Mahere Whakaiti Para
Council’s commitment to waste minimisation through services, resources, and programs that help residents reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover waste.
Council's Strategic Waste Documents
Like all other aspects of our Council, the direction of our waste strategy comes from a combination of regulations from central Government, strategic decisions from local Government and industry guidance for achieving best practice.
Our strategy for waste is to move towards a circular economy where we:
- Keep products and materials in use for as long as possible
- Extract the maximum value from them whilst in use
- Recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of use
To encourage this, Council offers community workshops and events to share knowledge and ideas for circular living and offers a range of recycling services free of charge.
Ōtorohanga District Council do not own any active landfills and disposal of refuse across our District works on a ‘user pays’ basis with prices set by the Landfill operators.
We work in collaboration with Waikato Regional Council and many other District Councils on a range of projects and initiatives to ensure that we are connected with the overall strategy for waste in the Waikato region and can maximise opportunities for our communities.
Waste Minimisation & Management Plan
Our Waste Minimisation and Management Plan is the key document that sets out how we will support our District to minimise and manage waste. Required by Government and reviewed and updated every six years, the Plan also help us access waste levy funding from the Government that we can spend across our District to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
The Waste Management and Minimisation Plan was adopted by Council on 23 April 2024.
