Through the Government’s Waste Levy (a charge applied to wastes put in landfills), Ōtorohanaga District Council provides a series of Community Events throughout 2026 to share knowledge from recycling and sustainability experts, help you save items from landfill and offer opportunities to learn new skills. These are funded via the Waste Levy, not from property rates. Any questions please contact us.

Sip & Sew Workshops
Date: Sunday 24 May: Ōtorohanga 9.30-11.30am: Council Chambers Kāwhia 2-4pm: Kāwhia Community Hall. Details: Sarah is back in the District following the success of last year’s workshops. Bring along your sewing projects, fabric items to repair, or enjoy learning how to make tote bags out of old overalls and feed bags (materials, machines and refreshments provided). Household Chemical and Electrical Goods Drop-off Events
Date: Saturday 6 June. Locations: Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia. Free household chemical and electrical drop-off events. Get rid of old and unwanted chemicals: paint & solvents, oils and household chemicals, pesticides & herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. This year we're also collecting old and unwanted electrical items including: computers, TVs, and cables etc. We are NOT accepting whiteware any larger than microwaves at these events. We are planning a large whiteware event for later in 2026. Waste Ed with Kate
Date: 11 & 12 November. Locations: Ōtorohanga and Kāwhia. Details: Kate is returning to the District to share with us tips on all things food, waste and recycling.
