This year’s local elections in Ōtorohanga also include a binding referendum on whether Māori wards should continue here.
Māori wards are like Māori seats in Parliament, they make sure Māori communities have a voice at the decision making table.
Because of a law change in 2024, councils like ours with Māori wards must now ask our community to decide:
• YES - keep Māori wards in Ōtorohanga
• NO -remove Māori wards in Ōtorohanga
Everyone on both the General and Māori rolls can vote. The referendum will be part of your voting pack.
Voting runs from 9 September to 11 October 2025, make sure you have your say in the future of Ōtorohanga.
