Ōtorohanga College students are behind the camera today having an authentic conversation with local dance teacher and choreographer Mel O'Brien, for a homegrown video podcast, The Fade Up 2. They’re filming at Soul Hair Salon, working with professional filmmakers Sasha McLaren and Fabrice Coquet from He Koniahi Story Circle.
The Fade Up project is a partnership between Ōtorohanga District Council, Ōtorohanga College, Soul Salon owner Brooke Kenny, and many others. It's the brainchild of Council's community development and wellbeing manager, Nicky Deeley. Nicky is also the producer. The project reminds us that big conversations can start in small towns.
The Fade Up is a youth-led video series about connection, community, and the power of local storytelling. It brings young people together to film inspiring locals sharing real conversations, experiences and perspectives. We’re proud of Karla, Nicole, Blair, Marua and Robert as they step into this mahi today. The goal is simple but powerful: to empower rangatahi through positive role models and relatable stories. So they can learn new skills, build confidence, and feel a sense of possibility.
More info coming soon including introducing Mel and how you can watch the video podcast!
