FROM RESPONSE TO RECOVERY
We have today issued a joint media release confirming the transition from response into recovery following the recent Civil Defence State of Emergency.

The Ōtorohanga and Waipā districts are shifting from the response phase into recovery following the recent severe weather event and the declaration of a Civil Defence State of Emergency.
Waipā Mayor Mike Pettit said while the most urgent impacts have been addressed, significant work remains to support affected communities and repair damaged infrastructure.
“Over the past 10 days, our focus has been on keeping people safe, restoring access, and responding to urgent issues,” Pettit said. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of emergency services, contractors, volunteers, and council staff, we are now able to shift our attention to recovery.”
Ōtorohanga Mayor Rodney Dow said “Moving into recovery is about rolling up our sleeves and standing shoulder to shoulder with our families, local businesses and rural communities for the long haul. When events like this hit, the effects don’t disappear overnight, there’s fencing to repair, land to restore, access to sort out and a lot of hard work ahead. We’re committed to backing our district every step of the way.”
“Working closely with Waipā District Council means we can take a practical approach. Our districts share roads, rivers and rural networks, and recovery works best when neighbours pull together.”
The transition means emergency response activities will wind down, with a stronger focus on recovery including assessing damage, restoring essential services, and coordinating support for those most affected.
Both councils emphasised that recovery will take time. “We understand that some residents and businesses are still facing disruption and uncertainty,” Pettit said. “We are committed to walking alongside our communities every step of the way.”
Council teams will continue assessing roads, water networks, and other critical infrastructure, while working closely with partner agencies to ensure support reaches those who need it most.
Both mayors agreed that the spirit of looking out for each other had been remarkable across both districts. “That community spirit makes all the difference in times like this,” they said.
Further updates on recovery efforts and available support will be shared through both the councils’ usual communication channels.
