Ōtorohanga Library Shines a Light on Dyslexia Awareness Month

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month – a time to recognise and celebrate the strengths of people with dyslexia, as well as build greater understanding of the challenges they may face. Dyslexia is not a reflection of intelligence; it simply means that people process written language differently.

With the right support, encouragement and resources, people with dyslexia can thrive, often showing remarkable creativity, problem-solving skills and “outside the box” thinking.

At Ōtorohanga District Library, we’re proud to be part of this kaupapa by creating opportunities for learning, connection, and creativity throughout the month. Here’s what’s happening:

  • Dyslexia Display – Explore our special collection of books and resources for children, parents, educators and anyone wanting to know more about dyslexia and other learning differences.
  • Bookmark Design Competition – Open to primary school students, with three age categories. Budding artists are invited to design a bookmark that celebrates reading and creativity. Pick your entry form up today.  Entries close on the 31st October.
  • Badge-Making Session – Come along on the 21st October between 3.30 and 4.30pm , design your own badge, and use our badge maker to bring it to life. This is a fun, free activity for anyone with dyslexia, or for whānau and friends who want to show their support.
  • Neurodiverse Superpower Board – Share your story! Tell us about the unique strengths that come with dyslexia or other learning differences.
  • Colouring Corner – Enjoy relaxing colouring-in pages available in the library or to take home.
  • New Website Page – We’ve launched a dedicated Dyslexia page on our library page of the Ōtorohanga District Council website, with information about the resources we have available, and links to further support. Dyslexia Resources

We warmly invite everyone in our community to get involved. Whether you’re living with dyslexia, supporting someone who is, or simply wanting to learn more, Ōtorohanga Library is here to celebrate diversity, inclusion and the power of different ways of thinking.
