New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi (evacuation), is happening on Thursday 16 October at 9.30am.
It’s easy to take part:
- Register your household, school, business or marae at getready.govt.nz/involved/shakeout/sign-up
- On ShakeOut Day - "Drop, Cover and Hold" for 30 - 60 seconds.
If you’re in a tsunami evacuation zone, practice your tsunami hīkoi by moving immediately out of your zone, head for the nearest high ground or as far inland as you can.
Need inspiration? NZ Civil Defence has ideas to help you run your drill at getready.govt.nz/how-to-shakeout
And if you don’t have an emergency plan in place, now’s the perfect time to create one with friends, whānau or colleagues, so you’re ready when it counts.
