TSUNAMI ADVISORY – QUAKE UPGRADED TO M8.8

The earthquake off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia has been upgraded to magnitude 8.8. While this is a significant event, there are currently no changes to the zones under threat, and the forecast map remains the same.

However, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a tsunami advisory for all coastal areas of New Zealand, including our district.

What this means for our community:

  • Strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges are expected along ALL COASTAL AREAS of the North Island, South Island, Stewart Island, Great Barrier Island and the Chatham Islands.

  • This includes rivers, estuaries, harbours, and marinas in our district.

  • There is no need to evacuate unless you are specifically instructed to do so by Civil Defence or emergency services.

What you should do:

  • Stay out of the water — this includes swimming, surfing, boating, and fishing.

  • Stay off beaches and shorelines.

  • Do not go to the coast to watch wave activity — surges can be dangerous and may arrive with little or no warning.

  • If you are on a boat or in a marina, move to shore unless advised otherwise.

  • Avoid harbours, rivers and estuaries.

Please help spread this message to friends, family and neighbours.
