Ōtorohanga District Council Services

🏡 Resource Consents

If you’re thinking of subdividing or developing your land, you may need to apply for a resource consent under Council’s District Plan. Council’s planning staff can advise whether a consent is needed and guide you through the process if one is required.

📚 Library Services

The Ōtorohanga District Library is a modern, welcoming space in the centre of town.

  • Membership is free to residents and ratepayers.

  • Resources include books for all ages, free computer access, and WiFi.

  • Programmes include:

    • Wriggle & Rhyme (babies)

    • Storytime (ages 2–4)

    • Holiday reading programmes

    • Children’s school holiday activities

    • Afterschool STEM (Mon & Thurs during term)

    • Monthly adult reading discussion group

  • Kāwhia Library (our branch library) is open 7.5 hours a week and offers 24/7 WiFi.

🐶 Dog Registration

Moving with pets? Dogs must be registered in their new district.

  • Transferring registration is free and quick.

  • Unregistered dogs may incur penalties or fines.
    Call or visit our office to update your dog’s registration.

🛠️ Building / Renovation

Planning to build or renovate your home, shed, or add a fireplace? You’ll likely need a building consent.

  • Our building control team will help you meet the requirements of the Building Act.

  • We guide you through the application and documentation process — making it stress-free and efficient.

♻️ Refuse / Recycling

Council provides weekly refuse and recycling collection in urban areas:

  • Ōtorohanga, Kāwhia, and Aotea

  • Refuse must be in official bags (available at local stores)

  • No rural collection, but transfer stations are available

  • Approved recyclables can be dropped off free of charge

  • Rubbish disposal may incur a fee (unless using official bags)

🏊 Swimming Pool

The Ōtorohanga Memorial Pool complex includes:

  • A 20m heated indoor pool (open year-round)

  • Learn-to-swim lessons for all ages

  • A fully equipped fitness centre
