Next week, Council’s contractor will start the construction of a new water storage tank at the Mountain View Road Reservoir. In fact, preparatory earthworks are already underway. The contractor has made good progress having completed excavations, with back-filling in-progress, ready for the building platform and foundations of the new 500,000 litre tank.

The need for additional water storage in Ōtorohanga to support during periods of low rainfall, particularly in summer, had been identified in the Council's 10-Year Long Term Plan. The additional tank is one of a number of improvements that are aimed to reduce supply risks, build resilience, prepare and respond to climate change, and provide for housing and growth within the District. Funding for the design and build has been obtained from Central Government, as part of a stimulus package, under the Three Waters Reform.

The new tank has been designed to match the existing steel tank and will sit lower than the maximum height permitted for a new residential dwelling built on the site. Nearby residents have been informed of the project and were invited to contact the Council with any queries.

The project will take approximately 2-3 months, and is expected to be completed early in 2022.

It is hoped that this project will improve the health and well-being of residents in Ōtorohanga, through better storage and supply of safe drinking water to the community.
