Food Safety and Events

Planning on selling food in the Ōtorohanga District? All people selling food are subject to food and safety rules, set out by Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI). Please ensure you understand your obligations as a food seller.

Food Seller Registration

Do you need to be registered as a food seller? That depends. Food activities that are ‘low risk’, either because they don't happen often or only involve selling to a small number of people, or include low food safety risk foods, don't need to operate under a food control plan or a national programme. This applies to some fundraising and community group food activities and some food businesses. MPI also made an announcement in late 2025 exempting home based shelf-stable cake maker activities from registration until 31 October 2028. It all depends on your situation, so, it is always best to check.

Food Seller Exemptions

To check whether you are exempt from operating under a food control plan or national programme

Becoming a Registered Food Seller

If you are not exempt from registration, you’ll need apply to Ōtorohanga District Council to be a registered food seller. See more here

Then, once registered, you’ll need to be verified as a food seller. See more here

Follow Food Safety Standards

Whether you’re registered or exempt, you’ll need to ensure you comply with MPI’s food safety standards. See more here.
