How the destination narratives were developed:
Our destination narratives were shaped through a collaborative process designed to reflect the authentic identity of Ōtorohanga District and the aspirations of the people who call it home.
Through a series of community, iwi and tourism industry workshops, local residents, mana whenua, tourism operators and hospitality businesses shared their perspectives on what makes the district unique.
Together, we explored our landscapes, stories, people and opportunities. Through discussion, mapping exercises and storytelling, we identified the qualities that define Ōtorohanga District and resonate most strongly with both visitors and locals.
The King Country identity emerged strongly throughout the workshops, with participants highlighting the district's unique blend of rural character, natural beauty, cultural heritage and community spirit.
Six key themes emerged:
- Rich cultural history
- Nature and the natural world
- Conservation and kaitiakitanga
- Kiwiana identity
- Agriculture and rural life
- Kiwi hospitality and manaakitanga
These themes were refined into shared narratives that capture the district's character – authentic, grounded, welcoming and deeply connected to the land.
The final narratives reflect the collective voice of our district and provide a foundation for future storytelling, destination marketing and visitor experiences.
