A range of hazards and emergencies may contaminate your water supply and make it unsafe to drink or use. When this occurs, a boil water notice will be issued. This is a directive to boil all water before consuming it. Residents and users need to boil their water for at least one minute for:
- Drinking water
- Food preparation
- Ice
- Utensil washing
- Washing teeth
- Feeding pets
Electric jugs with a cut-off switch can be used as long as they are full – allow the water to come to a boil and wait for it to switch off. Do not hold the switch down to increase the boiling time.
Water can also be placed in a clean metal pan and brought to a rolling boil for one minute.
Boiled water should be covered and allowed to cool in the same container. The taste will improve if allowed to stand.
