Loo lingo confuses
Constructed. late last year, Kawhia°s 'flash flushers' on Jervois St feature signage reading "Taane"and "Wahine" rather than "Men" and "Women"".
At a Kawhia Community Board meeting last Thursday, Otorohanga manor Dale Williams said he was aware some visitors had trouble interpreting the unusual signage.
"It is confusing for international visitors who do not know what a Wahine is. I understand it has caused embarrassment on a number of occasions."
Councillor Deborah Pilkington said she had also heard similar comments about the signage.
However, Mr Williams said he believed the Maori terns were fitting for a community like Kawhia and, because international male and female symbols also featured on the facility, he did not consider it to be a major problem.
"I don't really see anything wrong with it. The signage is clear."
