Developers appeal ODC decision
The Environment Court will consider an application for a new subdivision near Kawhia, after it was declined by Otorohanga District Council earlier this month.
The applicants, Dave McPherson and Jane Stevens, have launched an appeal against the council's decision, describing their handling of the process as "poor".
The proposed subdivision - located about six kilometres east of the Kawhia township on
Motutara Peninsula, adjacent to the Puti Bridge and Mangaora inlet - would see a 13ha property divided into six rural lots to be used for residential or rural lifestyle activities.
The Environment Court hearing will be "de novo" - a completely new trial held as if the original hearing had not taken place.
Representatives from the council will be required to attend the Environment Court hearing in order to justify their reasons for declining the application.
A date for the appeal is yet to be confirmed however, it is expected to several months away.
Date set for festival sequel
The date has been confirmed for Otoro-hanga's second Great Kiwiana Festival.
The festival, organised by local volunteer group Project Kiwiana, will be held on March
11, 2006.
The first festival was held on March 12 this year and drew crowds of more than 3000.
Highlights of the day included a mascot marathon, goal kicking in gumboots competition, hanging out the washing competition, a performance by Brendan Dugan and a pikelet-making competition hosted by To Seagar.
There are plans to make the festival an annual event.
