ODC's Westridge opens for business

Otorohanga District Council's residential subdivision was officially opened on Tuesday, marking a proud day for mayor Dale Williams.
Westridge has been a long-term project for the council since January 2004 when councillors voted to purchase and develop the land.
The development was promoted by Otorohanga Community Board in response to concerns that Otorohanga's growth was being stifled by a lack of developed land for expansion.
"It was clear to the community board that Otorohanga's growth was being limited by a lack of residential land and when incentives offered to private developers were unsuccessful, council took the initiative to create the development to satisfy the demand for housing" said Mr Williams.
The subdivision - located at the top of Thompson Ave off SH3 - contains 36 new sections and includes a range of sizes and prices.
Most sections have panoramic views across Otorohanga from Mt Ruapehu through to Mt Pirongia.
Eight sites have already sold. On Tuesday afternoon about 45 people gathered at Westridge to witness its official opening. Those attending the ceremony included council representatives, real estate agents, builders, architects and Thompson Ave residents.
Mr Williams said the subdivision opening proved to be a highlight of his time as mayor.
"We are proud, not just because this project is up and running but because Otorohanga
is progressing."
Mr Williams, who unveiled the subdivision's modern signage during the ceremony, said it was satisfying to see the project officially open.
"Suffice to say it's been a long road but we tend to forget about it when we get to cut the ribbon."
Former mayor Eric Tait and community board chairman Graham Wilshier also addressed the crowd, both referring to Westridge as a brave move by council.
"This council has taken it by the throat and said "hey we have got to encourage people to come into the community'," said Mr Tait.
"Westridge is an example of forward thinking," said Mr Wilshier.
"Otorohanga will continue to thrive and grow as long as projects like Westridge are part of the mix."
Despite having been officially opened some work is yet to be completed at Westridge, including installation of footpaths and tidying up.
