Winners and losers declare expenses
Local government is a low budget affair in the North King Country.
Candidates in October's elections for Otorohanga and Waitomo district councils were required to declare their elections expenses last month.
However, the campaign expenses of potential and successful candidates were well below the maximum levels permitted by the Local Electoral Act.
In the Waitomo District, mayoral and Waitomo rural candidates were permitted to spend up to $7000, with Te Kuiti urban candidates permitted to spend $3500.
However, only three candidates spent more than $2000 on their campaigns.
The biggest spender was Christine Chaplow who spent $3461 on her campaign.
Mrs Chaplow stood for both the mayoralty and council.
She was elected as a councillor for the Te Kuiti ward.
The next largest declaration was made by mayor Mark Ammon, who spent $2947.08, followed by Phillip Crown who spent $2291.
Mr Crown, a first time candidate, stood for both the mayoralty and the rural ward, but was not elected.
In the Otorohanga district, mayoral candidates were permitted to spend $7000, with candidates for all wards, as well as the Otorohanga and Kawhia community boards, permitted to spend up to $3500.
Otorohanga's biggest spender was relatively unknown Maureen McCool, who stood unsuccessfully for both the mayoralty and Otorohanga ward, spending $3427,42.
Dale Williams spent $2109.40 on his successful mayoral campaign, with runner-up Sonya Hetet a distant third, spending $527.
Six Otorohanga candidates are yet to make declarations.
