Project kiwiana plots to unleash excitement in Oto

Project Kiwiana is at it again.

Despite keeping a low public profile in recent months, the group dedicated to making Otorohanga the 'Kiwiana capital of New Zealand' has definitely not been resting on its laurels.

Behind closed doors, Project Kiwiana has been plotting all sorts of exciting activities and initiatives to unleash in the coming months.

The humble coffee mug has received a makeover, with the release of 'Kiwiana mugs'- the latest offering from the group.

The mugs feature the famous Kiwiana icons which adorn Otorohanga's streetlights, and are on sale at the Kiwi House, Caves Craft Co-op, Otorohanga Sheepskins and Otorohanga I-Site.

"These are really wonderful and absolutely unique mugs," said Project Kiwiana chairwoman Bev Moloney.

"We think a lot of Otorohanga people who are going overseas to visit friends or family will take these to give as presents.

They are an ideal gift. You can't get them anywhere else - they represent Otorohanga."

Mrs Moloney said Otorohanga District Council has already purchased 20 mugs to use as corporate gifts.

The mugs are available specially packaged for $20, or for $15 unpackaged.

Project Kiwiana has also produced stickers featuring the icons to complement the mugs.

Mrs Moloney said the stickers are already proving popular with children.

The Kiwiana influence will also extend to Otorohanga's craft fair in November.

As well as running stalls, Project Kiwiana will host an exhibition of artwork by well known artist and cartoonist David Henshaw in the week leading up to the fair.

Mrs Moloney said Project Kiwiana will also use the fair to promote the inaugural Kiwiana festival, to be held in March 2005.

"The festival is already generating a lot of interest and planning is going really well.

"We have all sorts of crazy ideas planned."

The festival has received the support of several national celebrities.

Sir Edmund Hillary is the festival's patron. Celebrity chef Jo Seager has also confirmed her attendance.
