Waipa River Weir and Water Supply Intake. |
We provide water supplies:
to give consumers potable water within Council's defined water supply areas which meet agreed standards for quality and reasonable expectations of consumers for volume and pressure.
|
How this service is provided:
Council's water assets consist of six seperate water supplies, these are:
| Otorohanga Community |
| Kawhia Community |
| Waipa Rural Water Supply Scheme |
| Tihiroa Rural Water Supply Scheme |
| Arohena Rural Water Supply Scheme |
|
Three sub-schemes |
- Huirimu |
|
- Kahorekau |
| - Taupaki |
| Ranginui Rural Water Supply Scheme |
Community schemes area a fully reticulated pressure supply with fire protection.
In Otorohanga, water is drawn from the Waipa River on Rangiatea Road and treated in the Otorohanga / Waipa Treatment Plant, before being pumped to two 1,000,000 litre reservoirs above Thompson Avenue. It is then supplied to the town via water mains (approximately 34 kilometres of them) and connections to individual properties. The majority of the community is gravity fed, although three higher areas have pressure augmented by pumping.
Kawhia's water comes from a combination of springs and a bore and is treated at the Town Plant in Tahuri Street before being pumped to two 400,000 litre reservoirs located on the western side of the community. It is then supplied to the town through water mains (approximately 8 kilometres of them) and connections to individual properties.
For both the Otorohanga and Kawhia communities, a shut-off valve (toby) is provided at each property boundary. Commercial/industrial properties are generally metered and pay for their water on a per cubic metre basis.
The four Rural Water Supply Schemes all draw water from rivers or streams and all (with the exception of Taupaki which is filtered only) are treated before being supplied (generally by gravity) to large areas, usually by means of a trickle feed into 24 hour storage facilities on each property. All consumers on rural supplies are metered and pay varying charges for both supply availability and consumption.
Each rural scheme has its own committee which meets twice yearly, and use of water is subject to conditions set by these Committee's.
Cost
Residential consumers in Otorohanga and Kawhia pay $243 and $293 respectively per property per annum.
