Stormwater

We provide a stormwater service:

to minimise surface flooding in the Otorohanga and Kawhia communities, ensuring protection of public health, property and infrastructure.

How this service is provided:

Otorohanga:    The community stormwater reticulation consists of around 6 kilometres of piped mains and three kilometres of open drains. Stormwater generated within the community generally gravitates to one of three pump-stations and then discharges to the Waipa river. Properties either discharge stormwater out into the kerb and channel or into a stormwater connection at their boundary.

Kawhia:            All stormwater in Kawhia discharges directly to the sea either via small localised catchments or through collectors to the main drain running through the centre of the community.  A small pump-station also serves one area of the town.  The reticulation system includes around one kilometre of piped mains and two kilometres of open drains.

In general, stormwater volume is limited to varying capacity of pipes, open water courses, and road surfaces, but is designed to minimise significant nuisance.

Cost:

In Otorohanga the average cost per year of this activity is approximately $38.00 / property, while in Kawhia it is approximately $40.00
