Footpath, Berms and Walkway

Footpath

We provide footpaths on some streets in the communities

For the safe and comfortable access for personal/social activities and recreation.

How is this service Provided

Access is provided through 26km of hard surfaced footpaths.  A few streets have interconnecting walkways.  Council has an active maintenance and upgrading programme.

Services Provided

1.     Generally urban streets have a footpath at least on one side.  Some streets, especially in Kawhia, have none at all, but we are extending the length of footpaths as funding permits.

2.     In high traffic areas, such as near shopping areas, the footpath is generally constructed more than 2m wide, and is usually on both sides of the road.

3.     Berms where not maintained by residents, are mown as required.  Steep banks are maintained for safety, visibility and tidiness as required.

4.     Autumn leaf removal is undertaken in streets with deciduous trees.

5.     Pram crossings are installed where wheeled traffic is common.

6.     The footpaths are maintained, within budget constraints, to minimise distress to pedestrians, pushchairs, mobility scooters etc.

7.     Street litter bins are placed in areas of demand, such as around shopping areas and parks, and are emptied regularly.

Monitoring the Service

Footpath inspection and work programming at least annually.

Cost

The cost of this activity is included in the land transport account.
