Building Control

Goal

To ensure that buildings are safe, will not endanger people’s health, will contribute to the wellbeing of the community, can be safely evacuated in the event of fire and are built in ways that promote sustainable development.

Building Enquiries

Consent application forms, checklists and building fees and charges are available for downloading on this website.
Links;   Forms/Online forms   and   Financial information/ Fees and Charges
General building enquiries can be answered by the Customer Services Officers on
0800 738 199 or 07 873 8199 or email  info@otodc.govt.nz.

Building Consent Applications

Completed building consent applications can be mailed to Otorohanga District Council,
PO Box 11, Otorohanga or delivered to the Council office in Otorohanga.

The application must be accompanied with the correct fees.  The application will then be formally accepted and processing commenced.
The Building Act 2004 requires us to process your application within 20 working days.
The clock starts when your application is received.  Applications are processed strictly in the order in which they are received.  An invoice will be generated and mailed out if the correct fees have not been paid at time of application.

Council staff will review all the information provided with your application.  Should any item require clarification, or further information be needed, we will notify you in writing.  The time clock stops until the further information is received.
When processing is complete and all fees paid, your consent will be mailed out.

Building Inspections

You must notify Council at least 24 hours before you require an inspection.
No inspection will be carried out until the Building Consent is issued.
When your application is processed, the building officer will determine what inspections are necessary. Each inspection will be identified on the Site Inspection Sheet which will accompany your building consent.
It is very important that boundary pegs are located before booking a footing or foundation inspection.

Information on the Building Process

A number of websites promoted by the Government provide information on the Building process and useful links to many construction industry websites.
