2010 Local Body Elections - 9 October 2010
Elections are conducted by postal vote. Voting packs will be posted out to all people on the electoral roll between Friday 17 September 2010 and Wednesday 22 September 2010. If, after Wednesday 22nd September you have not received your voting pack contact the electoral officer and special voting papers will be sent to you.
Your voting pack comprises a voting paper, a candidate profile booklet and a reply paid envelope to return your voting paper.
Special votes are available to all electors:
- Whose names do not appear on the final Electoral Roll, but who qualify as electors
- Who did not receive a voting document previously posted to them
- Who spoiled or damaged a voting document previously posted to them
- Whose names do not appear on the Unpublished roll
Special votes require the completion of a statutory declaration.
If an elector requests a special vote and is not on the parliamentary roll (e.g. they turned 18 after the preliminary Electoral Roll closed), the person must enrol by the Tuesday prior to the close of voting.
To vote in a local body election, you need to be enrolled. You are eligible to enrol if you:
- Are 18 years of age or older
- Are a new Zealand citizen or permanent resident
- Have lived in New Zealand, continuously, at any time for one year or more
- Have lived at your current address for more than one month
- Are a non resident ratepayer who has applied for enrolment on the ratepayer roll
- Are resident outside of the Otorohanga District and have been nominated by a firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property in the Otorohanga District
All parliamentary electors are automatically enrolled on the local body residential electoral roll at the address where they live.
If your name is not on the residential roll, or you wish to change your address details on the roll you should:
- Complete the appropriate form at any post shop
- Phone 0800ENROLNOW (0800 367 656)
- Go to the Electoral Enrolment Centre Website www.elections.govt.nz
If you are on the parliamentary roll in one area and pay rates on a property in another, you may be eligible to apply for enrolment on the non-resident ratepayer roll (for the property for which you pay rates but don’t reside).
Companies, organisations, or societies paying rates on a property may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (provided that both the person nominating and the nominee live outside the area).
Ratepayer roll enrolment forms are available at council offices or from the Electoral officer (07 873 4000).
To change your details on the ratepayer roll contact the Electoral Officer.
The roll will be available for inspection. You can check if your name and details are correct by checking the roll at the Electoral Office – 17 Maniapoto St, Otorohanga. Viewing is also available at:
